Each of the nine private gardens reflect the individual interests and passions of the owners and thier families and will inspire both new gardeners designing their first perennial bed and accomplished landscapers with acres of "garden rooms".

The tour of Concord-area gardens is self-guided and self-paced. Garden-goers should arrive at the Museum to pick-up a map prior to starting out. Tickets are good for either or both days, but each garden may only be visited once. The Museum Shop is filled with garden-related gifts and visitors are invited to admire the Museum's beautifully restored gardens.

Friday and Saturday June 4-5, 2011 (rain or shine) 9:00 am- 4:00 pm.
Tickets at the door for non-members $38.
Concord Museum, 200 Lexington Road, Concord, Massachusetts 01742
tel: 978-369-9763 www.concordmuseum.org

Visit Cape Cod Museums

Cape Cod has a great variety of museums -- giving you the history of what makes Cape Cod so special. Seems like we were just hunkering down for Earl--who by the way, got way more hype than he deserved. We had rain from 8:30 pm to 4:00 am, and could have served breakfast outdoors, it was that beautiful the next day. Unfortunately, we had all the furniture tied up, but have been having breakfast outside since.

The weather is really beautiful right now. It is those clear bright days and cool nights. The moon seems bigger than ever and it is only a half moon. Soon we will have a harvest moon to brighten our sky.September is a great month to take advantage of the arts and entertainment that abounds on Cape Cod.

After a day of enjoying different galleries on Cape Cod, take advantage of the night life offered by our many off Broadway theatres. They have a great antique and flea market on Saturday and Sunday. I found some really pretty celluloid boxes. I always remember my Aunt Olive, whose doll now lives at the Inn, having a set on her dresser. I was fascinated by them, then and now. This year one of our guests found an oil painting on wood. Looks like something he will be able to take to the Antiques Road Show.

The festivities close with the annual "Grape Stomp and Jazz Festival" at the Truro winery. Yes, I did say winery. I know when you think of wineries, you may first think of the New York Finger Lakes , California's Napa Valley, of course, but rarely would you think of Cape Cod. Well, about 20 minutes from the Whalewalk Inn is the Truro Winery. From the road you will see clusters of purple Cabernet franc and chardonnay grapes, and further up the blue-tinged Merlot grapes. Dave Roberts and his family bought the winery in 2007. They make a selection of six different wines which are sold all over the Cape, especially at Windmill Liquors, right around the corner from the Inn. So add a tour and wine tasting at the winery as part of your stay at the Inn on Cape Cod. There is a charge for the tasting, but you do get a nice commemorative wine glass to add to your collection.

If you prefer organically grown products, there is a winery in Falmouth, the Cape Cod Winery. The Lazzaris have cultivated a vineyard of not only European grape varieties, but several French-American hybrids. They grow grapes without using any pesticides. If you are taking a day trip to Nantucket, there is a winery there also, The Nantucket Vineyard. Here they make a variety of white and red wines with grapes from Washington State. Next door houses the Cisco Brewers and Triple Eight Distillery.

If beer is your thing to make or just to drink, you must visit Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis. Some of their choices of beer are Cape Cod Red, India Pale Ale, Beach Blonde, Summer Ale, Harvest, Porter, the award winning Dunkell-Weizen, Berry Merry and Old Man Winter. Tours are on Saturday at 1:00 pm and Tuesdays at 11:00 am. They sell Growlers, which is a large refillable jug of beer, filled right from the tap. Just remember to wash your Growler before you get it refilled. (The Cape Cod Potato Chip Factory is close by for another informative tour, and free chips. Can also buy them at a discounted price.)

You don't have to travel from coast to coast to sample some really great wines and a terrific beer. And, Cape Cod Potato Chips are the best. Make your reservations today, design your own tour, and stay at the Whalewalk Inn & Spa for a relaxing, fun-filled time.

15% Discount on Cape Cod at the Whalewalk Inn & Spa

The weather on Cape Cod has been absolutely fantastic. Hiking or walking is an excellent and virtually cost-free way to see the geographic splendor and diversity of Cape Cod up close.

Cape Cod Pathways is the name of a network of trails across the Cape. It is constantly being expanded and when complete, will extend from Provincetown to Falmouth and Bourne and provide a connection between the seashore and the Cape's wooded interior.

On the Cape Cod Commission's website, you'll find a map showing 106 public walking trails along with descriptions of the trails, pictures, and links for more information about each. Of the 104 trails, 36 are within 1.5 miles of a public transportation route stop on Cape Cod."

Some of her favorites are:

"South Beach in Chatham, an area that has undergone extensive change since a storm-induced breach in North Beach in 1987.
Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail in Wellfleet, a cool, mossy 1.25-mile loop in stunted oak and pine woods with a boardwalk through a cedar swamp.

Be sensible when you walk: Wear a hat and take sunscreen, water, and mosquito repellent."

July 22, Cape Cod Budget Living Examiner by Ellen Albanese

Make your reservations today at the Whalewalk Inn & Spa and enjoy the many great hiking and biking trails along the Cape.

Cape Cod -- 11 Things to Do to Bring Out the Kid in You

Remember all the simple fun you had as a kid when you visited the seashore, lake shore, or river shore? Well, here are 11 things you can do to bring back the kid in you, while visiting the Cape Cod National Seashore beaches. They are:

1. Go beach combing to collect shells, stones and even sea glass.

2. Climb a lighthouse -- Highland Light has some great views!

3. Play in the water, ride a wave, go body surfing -- lessons are available for all who want to be the great Kahuna.

4. Eat a cranberry (home grown in bread, pancakes, or jam), and try a wild beach plum. (We serve it as our jam for toast.

5. Hold a hermit crab.

6. Take a boat ride -- canoe, kayak, whale watching boat, deep sea fishing boat out of Rock Harbor, seal watching, or sail boat ride.

7. Create a Sand Sculpture and take a picture and send it home for all to see.

8. Catch a fish and eat a clam -- fish from shore, from a boat, in a pond, or in the sea. If you don't catch anything go to a great clam shack where clams, oysters and fish and chips abound.

9. Hike a quiet a woods -- enjoy 14 miles of self guided nature trails, listen to nature, and get energized with a brisk walk or a lazy stroll.

10 Enjoy a Campfire at the Beach -- every Monday and Wednesday at Nauset Light Beach at 7:30 during the month of July and 7:00 pm in August.

11. Book a room at the Whalewalk Inn and Spa -- start the day with an awesome breakfast, spend the day doing 1 through10, and partake of the many great restaurants for dinner. Then begins Cape night life -- an evening at the theatre, go to the drive-in for a double feature under the stars, live music and comedy at the Cape Cod Melody tent, or relax in your room with a brandy and a good book.

See you on Cape Cod!

Quahog Day on Cape Cod -- Doug Predicts 13 Weeks of Sunshine

What great and wonderful news from Cape Cod! Doug, the Cape's official quahog, traveled in style in a black limousine to the Quahog Day festivities at Hemisphere Restaurant to mark the first day of summer. Sort of like Punxsutawney Phil, Doug makes his summer prediction at these festivities. This year he predicts 13 weeks of sunshine -- so make your plans today to enjoy some summer sunshine on Cape Cod.

Also, a 10 minute drive from the Inn is Coast Guard Beach -- voted the 7th best beach in the US. It is a pristine beach where all enjoy the roar of the Atlantic. Dotted with surfers and swimmers it is the place to be on Cape Cod.

Make your reservations today at the Inn, and enjoy the summer fun -- and the great Cape Cod food, theatre, boating, golf, hiking, whale watching, and shopping.

Hawthorne Inn Continues to Green

Shipping a single bottle of Perrier Water to Massachusetts consumes 2 ounces of oil. Direct bookings only – call or book on line today.

Today Kevin and I went picnic shopping in Hyannis. We decided to have lunch at Baxter's. It was a great setting right on the channel. Here you could watch the pleasure boats and the ferries coming and going. The sun was shining, the temperature fantastic and the food was yummy. President Kennedy used to pull up to Baxter's by boat and have lunch. He was a great fan of Baxter's and we will surely recommend it to our guests. Their menu boasts of all the great food that Cape Codders and visitors seek out. We had a lobster crab cake as an appetizer and both of us could not resist the call of the fried clam strips. There was chowdah' on the menu along with lobster rolls, fried fish, calamari, and steak and hamburgers for the land lubbers. We did get our shopping done for the Memorial Day picnic, found a new couch for Barn Suite 2, so now are just awaiting its delivery.

So come down and see us and experience all that the Cape has to offer. OH! and now you can book on line and receive confirmation immediately.

Tea Rooms on Cape Cod

Just thinking about our first tea party ever at the Whalewalk Inn & Spa. It was to celebrate our granddaughter's 13th birthday. Party favors were antique tea cups found at some of our favorite haunts in Orleans. We served teas from Harney's Tea Company and "Uncle" Brendan was our charming server. We made heart shaped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, tarragon, grape and chicken sandwiches, radishes with tarragon butter, chocolate covered strawberries, tomatoes, mozzarella and basil on bagel chips, hummus and cucumber sandwiches and a beautiful red velvet cake with purple fondant and silver stars -- as requested by the birthday girl.

Just as fine London restaurants are known for their afternoon tea , so is Cape Cod. Now you don't have to travel across the pond for this experience. Here we have some really quaint tea rooms for a light lunch or just a sweet treat in the afternoon.

Village Tea Room at Borsari Gallery, owned by Bob and Kathy Bosari, is on Route 6A in Dennis. Their converted gallery opened in December with Geroge Davidson from Scotland as its proprietor and tea master.

Off of route 28, Jeni Hennessey, a native of Fareham, England, owns the Tea Shoppe at Mashpee Commons. Here men, as well as women, enjoy her hearty lunch fare such as shepherd's pie.

Paula Hegarty, owner of Dunbar Tea Shop and Tea Room says that tea is very relaxing and therapeutic. Her shop is located on Water Street in Sandwich. This converted carriage house serves about twenty different kinds of loose-leaf teas, and the owners are developing their own blend with cranberry and essence of almond.

Beth's Special Teas Bakery & Cafe in Sandwich center is an Americanized tea and coffee/sandwich shop. Owned by Beth Giampietro, her place makes you feel like you are at Grandma's house.

So come down and enjoy the beauty of Cape Cod and the National Seashore and share in its heritage found in our local tea rooms. Remember our Memorial Day Special -- book Friday through Sunday (three nights) and stay Monday on us. See you soon!

Experience Cape Cod Restaurant Week, May 17 to May 23

Last night was girl's night out, so Heather and I went to Chillingsworth and there met innkeeper friends, Margaret and Rebecca. The Steamship Authority put together an outing to see Nantucket. We left the inn at 9:30 (so you can see Nantucket and still have breakfast), and we set sail at 11:00 AM -- you could probably leave a little later and still have plenty of time to get there, but we all had to meet at 10:30. The ride over took an hour, and it was delightful. We had lunch on the boat as that was part of their tour for us. We immediately got on buses and had a drive around the island. It was a beautiful day and we had a very nice tour driver. Then it was on to the Whaling Museum. It is a great museum and gives a great historical account of the industry. Kevin says he couldn't have made it through the first day on the ship with the stench alone. After the tour we had some time to see the shops, experience the cobblestone streets, and enjoy the beauty of the area. We embarked on the Iyannough at 3:15 and were back at the Inn by 5:15 -- even saw the Kennedy Compound from the water.

So if you are planning to come to Cape Cod and stay at the Inn, maybe you would like to add a day, so you can take a trip to Nantucket. If you book with us, we can save you 20% on a round trip tickets. Schedules are available here or you can check on-line -- you can leave as early as 7:30 a.m., and come back as late as 9:00 p.m. for a full day on Nantucket.

If you like to Kayak see what this weekend has to offer:

Friday, May 14th take a Kayak trip on Big Pleasant Bay, South Orleans from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Space is limited, reservations required at 508-240-1211. You will be given directions at the time of trip booking.
Kayak on Saturday, the 15th from Strong Island, Chatham. Again reservations are required and call 508-240-1211 for more information.
Sunday, May 16th, kayak the Islands in Little Pleasant Bay from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Call the number above for reservations.

We have a book at the Inn with other weekend events. So please ask to see it upon arrival, so you can plan your days. Oh, and don't forget whale watching. Another fun treat! Call today at 508-255-0617 for reservations at the Inn and join us for your seaside adventures.

Brewster, Cape Cod in Bloom Festival -- Vintage Rates Extended until May 3, 2010

Blog Special Only: Book this weekend for three nights and take advantage of 2000 rates. Possibly. After winning the cup last month, Larry Ellison brought it back to San Francisco and the yacht club that won the race. In recent interviews, Ellison mentioned Newport as one of the three venues that were possible locations for the next race in 2013. What is most interesting, Ellison recently bought the Astor's Beachwood Mansion on Bellevue Avenue, closing it for daily tours and canceling all future weddings. What he will do with the mansion is not yet known. Dumpsters, though, have been seen outside the building. Could he be seriously thinking of Newport for the next race? Let's hope so! Stay tuned!

Best Food and Lodging during Newport's Restaurant Week

Newport Restaurant Week
March 19 - 28, 2010
Three-course prix fixe:
Lunch $16 Dinner $30

The always popular and sold out, Newport Restaurant Week, returns to Newport, RI, on March 19 - 28, 2010.
